Look at all the chatter about the long-awaited première of Mad Men this weekend! Note the use in this image of the hashtag #MadMen. It hasn’t reached trending status yet – but wait’ll tomorrow evening when the première is about to show!
For anyone who isn’t familiar or doesn’t watch much cable TV, Mad Men is a show about the advertising executives of the 1960s (Madison Avenue Advertising Men).
The show’s popularity exhibits here in the social media chatter since AMC announced the show was coming back.
As the première approaches, the#madmen tweets are coming more frequently. Above is from around Noon ET on Saturday, 3.24.12, the season première of the show is tomorrow, Sunday, 3.25.12.
It’s all fun and you get to share your anticipation (and addiction) on Social Media.
- Tweeps (Twitter people) reminding each other of where the show left off 18 months ago
- 1960s Style comments
- Character jabs
- Discussion of adultery, drinking and traditional vs current marketing mores…
…just look at the flow on the image above, the results of a #madmen search. Look at the different ways this search topic is applied by different tweeps.
But it’s not all about Fun.
You can’t help but notice the benefit of tagging a popular meme. Of course the biggest benefactor in the above image is AMC, the network producers and broadcasters of Mad Men. Note they have a promoted tweet at the top. They are diligently keeping their show front and center, via making suggestions for a première party, discussing the styles of the 60s and more…
Look at the 2nd post by AMC about style – 335 Retweets! Talk about some well thought out social media strategy! And the results were just what they hoped for and will only grow.
Note how virtually every tweet has a link – leading to their desired attention getter.
Notice Newsweek Magazine ensuring they get their piece of attention by creating a #MadMenChat for fans and ad execs that will run simultaneously with the premiere’s broadcast. (learn about tweet chats)
Bloggers (ahem) are also taking advantage of the meme (concept spread on the internet) by pinning their comments about anything related Newsweek Magazine is getting notice for its special Mad Men edition.
Not seen here are other mentions by tweeps watching the old shows, as a refresher, on Netflix. Netflix didn’t even have to post!
So are you beginning to understand the awesome potential and capabilities of participating on Twitter?
Do you see that you don’t have to be as big as AMC to get the benefit of a meme? Hashtags are just that valuable!
