Small Business Owner and you still don’t own a SmartPhone?

What’s the first thing you notice about this picture? No one has their Smartphones to their EARS! Why? Because there is so much more you can do with them than talk to others! (I don’t know if I’m always smiling when I use mine, but all the images I found had people smiling, so …whatever 🙂

But the point of this post is to bring you into the modern world! Why are your colleagues and customers using Smartphones, but you’re not?

Boy, bet they’re impressed when you flip open your phone… :s)

And when you call me to help you enter the marketing world of Social Media and you don’t own a Smartphone, … well… ’nuff said.

I’m not much on being PC, so here goes:

IF YOU HAVE A SMALL BUSINESS AND DON’T HAVE A SMARTPHONE, you’re a loser (sorry for the harsh words…but I want you to wake up!).  Maybe you have an 8-year-old computer with 2003 software on it, too. And you still wonder why others in your biz are becoming more successful than you?

I could end there. But for those of you huffing and puffing at me now, you don’t know what you don’t know. The initial expense of a Smartphone and internet access is an investment in your success. (And you CAN get a Smartphone for less when a new model is about to come out.)

Let me just clarify some drawbacks for those of you still carrying around a little flip phone. (And no, I don’t have any ties to any phone technologies, retailers, etc.)

You have to STOP THINKING OF YOUR PHONE AS A PHONE! A Smart Phone is NOT just a fancy phone.

It’s a fully loaded miniature computer technology device that allows you to have access to:

  • your email account(s)
  • the web
  • GPS!
  • your files (via the Cloud)
  • any Social Media
  • instant messaging
  • a camera and camcorder with instant uploading capabilities
  • task manager
  • scheduling
  • QR Codes
  • books
  • weather
  • your calendar
  • traffic
  • a document and business card scanner
  • contact manager
  • news
  • music / radio
  • tons of your industry related tools
  • credit card usage
  • so much more….
  • VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING YOU DO ROUTINELY ON YOUR DESKTOP (and so much more) ANYWHERE YOU MAY BE!

…and oh, yeah, you can also make phone calls on it.

In case you haven’t noticed, most business people with a smartphone often are not using it to talk. All you can do with your old phone is talk. Starting to get it?

Take the time to go to a phone store and play with one. If you have a family member or friend who has one, ask them to show you some of the things they do with theirs.

If you’re a boomer, don’t ask one of those young techies in the store to show you the features. You’ll just get pissed off because they’ll talk over your head using techie terms and make you nuts jumping screen to screen. You’d think retailers would have jumped on the growing usage by boomers and seniors and would think to employ tech savvy boomers and seniors in their stores to demo to their peers. But, I digress…

There is such a huge learning curve going on now. And it is so unfair – and stupid – that magazines, books, and retailers who talk about this technology are snobs when it comes to educating those who are not tech savvy. Just think how many more they could sell if they recognized that a lot of people are still intimidated by this technology (no matter how simple it really is once you play with it). Let’s get some Liberal Arts majors in to write some manuals that the average person can understand for immediate use.

Just get over your stubborn pride and get a Smartphone. NOW. Then call me to learn about Social Media strategies for your business since you’ll be able to get access to it. And you’re not really a loser… you just didn’t know what you didn’t know.

And here’s a great post on Smartphone Dos and Don’ts of the Office (where I got the image).

    1. Being stuck in the world of obsolete communications are hurting their ability to connect with customers. Imagine hiring someone who has to run back to his/her office for everything when their competition doesn’t.

  1. Some of us still don’t want to be tracked, whether or not we’re small business owners.

As for connecting with customers or just people in general, face-to-face still means a lot.

    1. Of course, face to face has huge value! But when the percentage of consumers becoming dependent on cellphones is increasingly and exponentially expanding, it is also just good business sense to keep up with technology. Thank you for your comment!
